How are breakbulk freight rates calculated, and what hidden costs should we watch out for?

Accepted Answer

The freight of breakbulk is calculated on a W/M (Weight or Measure) basis, based on the greater of the actual volume (CBM) or weight (MT). To avoid hidden costs, our quotes clearly specify loading, discharging, and lashing responsibilities under the agreed terms (e.g., FLT, FIO).

Please note: Ocean freight excludes port miscellaneous charges. Kindly specify if you need port charges at the port of loading included when requesting a quote.

The sailing schedule of breakbulk is not fixed liner service. How to ensure cargoes ship on time?

Accepted Answer

Breakbulk vessels operate under a Laycan (Laydays and Cancelling), with a typical loading window of approximately 10 days. Through our close partnerships with shipowners, IRIS Shipping secures your cargo space and oversees the entire process, including cargo delivery planning, tallying, and loading supervision. As long as the cargo dimensions are accurate and the cargo arrives at the port on schedule, we can guarantee a smooth loading operation.

What happens if our cargo fails to arrive at the port on time after booking?

Accepted Answer

Breakbulk space is extremely limited. Canceling a booking after the contract is signed usually results in Deadfreight, which can equal the full ocean freight amount. Therefore, IRIS strongly advises clients to double-check cargo readiness, customs clearance status, and dispatch schedules prior to booking to ensure seamless execution.

A robust manufacturing base in North and Northeast China provides a steady cargo supply for our South America routes.
